~Best Campsites Ever in Backpacker Magazine~
Isle Royale National Park didn’t get on my wish list until shortly before this photo was made. It had always seemed like a place just close enough to warrant going, but just far enough way that it didn’t seem worth it. Finally, my wife and I booked our tickets on the Voyageur II and trundled our way across the great lake to make a trip of hiking across the center of the island. Some sixty miles later, we were hooked– it’s a wilderness that’s both approachable, challenging and remote, while the lake of bears made us sleep a little easier at night. We’ll be going back. Despite the dense moose population, we spotted zero. There are plenty more mysteries to be found on the island.
