~Wilderness Year Resupply~
WE WEREN’T THINKING ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF SNOW…
cold, moose or even campfire when we reached the end of the road and the wide sandy landing at entry point #39: Baker Lake. We were thinking about how quiet it was. When we’d pulled the keys out of the ignitions, the hubbub of the office and city, and the whirr of things spinning, wind blowing and engines combusting suddenly stopped.
When I had the chance to paddle into the Boundary Waters with a crew from Frost River to resupply Dave and Amy Freeman on their Year in the Wilderness to Save the Boundary Waters, I jumped at the opportunity. The couple was roughly half way through their year, and the ice had only recently thawed. Every two weeks or so, folks from outside, partnering with the campaign to Save the Boundary Waters, would bring in the necessary supplies of food, swap out clothing and gear, bring dog food for the old sled dog Tank, and help keep these adventurers outside. I was honored to be part of one of the groups that got to do that. This feature was written for Frost River about the experience, and co-authored by myself and David Hoole.
